John Ryan Memorial Building
How it all began…
This building was named in honor of John P. Ryan, a former mayor of Eureka and a member of the Eureka Lions Club. Mr. Ryan was killed in an automobile accident in the late 1940’s.
After Mr. Ryan’s death, the Lions Club purchased the property at 17th and J Streets to build a memorial to him. The building was constructed mainly by the carpentry class of Eureka High School.
The construction was completed in 1953 and the building turned over to the Recreation Department. The City officially accepted the property from the Lions Club in December, 1954.
